Power-to-X

Industrial solutions for defossilization.

Methanisierungsanlage mit DWE-Reaktor zur Erzeugung von erneuerbarem Methan
With its synthesis reactors, DWE supplies central components for Power-to-X plants. The portfolio comprises of proprietary process licenses for CO₂ methanation and methanol synthesis, as well as the RWGS reactor developed together with Shell for the production of synthetic fuels. This offering is complemented by further reactors and apparatus for Power-to-X processes – from the pilot plant to the world-scale project.

Why Power-to-X

For many applications in aviation, shipping, and the chemical industry, liquid and gaseous energy carriers will remain indispensable in the long term. Power-to-X enables the production of synthetic fuels and energy carriers from renewable electricity, hydrogen, and carbon sources. This creates a link between renewable energy and existing infrastructures, logistics systems, and end users.

DWE’s role in the value chain

A Power-to-X plant combines renewable energies, hydrogen production, carbon sources, and the subsequent syntheses into fuels or chemical products. DWE focuses on the most process-demanding part of this chain: the synthesis. Here, reactor design, heat removal, temperature control and catalyst performance determine the yield, selectivity, and profitability of the overall plant.

Technological basis

Proprietary process licenses, more than 800 reactors delivered, decades of accumulated experience in the design of synthesis reactors and component sizes up to 1,500 t form the basis for the industrialization of Power-to-X processes.

Development takes place in the company’s own Technikum (pilot-plant center), and the transfer to commercial scale is achieved through numbering-up of proven multi-tubular reactors. DWE is thus able to support Power-to-X projects from pilot scale to world-scale plants.
