Geschweißte Großkomponenten für Navy & Defence.

Nuklearer Transport- und Lagerbehälter aus der Serienfertigung von DWE
For more than 100 years, the manufacture of welded large-scale structures has been one of DWE’s core competencies. On this basis, the company manufactures components and assemblies for navy and defence applications – from one-off parts and prototypes to quality-assured series production. The combination of engineering, welding technology, large-part manufacturing, and protected project handling enables the implementation of demanding programs in a confidential industrial environment.

Welding technology as a core competence.

Welding technology forms the basis of many navy and defence systems. DWE masters all essential welding processes in-house and has extensive experience in processing thick-walled and high-strength materials. Wall thicknesses of more than 400 mm as well as components up to 80 m in length, Ø 10.6 m in diameter, and 1,500 t in piece weight are part of the realized manufacturing spectrum. Qualification to DIN 2303 (Q1, Q2, BK1) underlines the expertise for safety-relevant welded structures in the defence sector.

Materials for special requirements

For navy and defence applications, DWE processes a broad spectrum of demanding materials, including antimagnetic stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, titanium, zirconium, magnesium, as well as duplex and super-duplex materials. A separate production hall for stainless steels and special materials enables the contamination-free processing of sensitive materials and compliance with special quality requirements.

Testing and verification

The required material and component properties are ensured by comprehensive testing and verification procedures. In addition to material and weld-seam testing, ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), TOFD, phased array, helium leak testing, and vacuum-tightness tests are available. For antimagnetic applications, verifications of magnetic permeability can also be carried out.

Engineering and manufacturing from a single source

In addition to manufacturing, DWE supports projects already in early development phases. Strength analyses, manufacturing-oriented design, welding and testing concepts, and the industrialization of new products are carried out in close coordination with the customer. The high manufacturing depth enables a seamless transition from development through prototype construction to series production.

Protected manufacturing and supply chain

Defence projects place particular demands on confidentiality, traceability, and security of supply. For this, DWE offers an enclosed site, high IT-security standards, controlled manufacturing areas, and an established network of qualified suppliers from Europe and the NATO states. The direct connection to rail and the Danube additionally enables the transport of large and heavy components without additional interfaces.

Resilient fuel supply

The long-term supply of fuels is becoming increasingly important for safety-relevant and strategic applications. DWE supports the industrialization of Power-to-X and synthetic-fuel projects with reactor, engineering, and manufacturing expertise for industrial plants. Flexible feedstock routes and the production of different fuel products thereby contribute to a resilient and diversified energy supply.

Welded structural components and vessels for navy applications, large-format steel structures, and components for safety-critical industrial and research programs. For example, DWE manufactured components for the Ariane 5 test infrastructure of DLR and ESA, including the diffuser of the ESA test stand P4.1 for the Vulcain 2 and VINCI engines. The project is exemplary of the ability to realize large-scale components with tight tolerances and extensive quality and documentation requirements.
