Water-, Gas- and Oil-operated Reactors
In addition to molten-salt reactors, DWE develops and manufactures multi-tubular reactors for a wide variety of heat-transfer and process concepts. The choice of heat-transfer medium depends on the process-engineering requirements, the temperature level, and the integration of the reactor into the respective energy and heat network.
Water is the most widely used heat-transfer medium in chemical process engineering worldwide. Accordingly, water- and boiling-water-operated multi-tubular reactors form an important focus of the DWE portfolio and are used, among others, in Power-to-X applications such as methanation and methanol synthesis.
DWE not only supplies the code-compliant engineering and manufacture of these reactor systems but also takes on their thermal and process-engineering design. This includes the calculation and design of water/steam circuits, the assessment of heat removal, and the assumption of the corresponding contractual guarantees for the thermal performance of the plant.
Heat-transfer media and
applications

Engineering and manufacturing
from a single source
Every reactor is designed and manufactured on the basis of the individual process data. DWE combines process-engineering, thermal, and mechanical design expertise with high in-house manufacturing depth. Execution follows the applicable codes and customer specifications, including material selection, pressure-equipment design, manufacturing, testing, and documentation.
Reactors for higher temperatures
Above approximately 300 °C, molten-salt technology comes into its own. Unlike systems with water/steam or oil circuits, the shell side of the reactor operates without pressure even at high temperatures. This makes it possible to realize reactors with high thermal outputs and excellent temperature control.
These properties make molten-salt reactors the preferred solution for large-scale, strongly exothermic processes with high demands on operational safety, temperature control, and plant availability.
